Can I learn violin in 2 years?
A common expectation is that a new instrument will increase in value over time, but this is not always true. In some instances a refitting by a qualified luthier can dramatically enhance an old instrument. For example, gluing seams that routinely come unglued or moving the soundpost just a bit can make a big difference in tone.
The most important thing is to test instruments before you buy them. Many shops have violins and bows you can try for a minute or two, and most luthiers are happy to let you play a few different models against each other. This is a great way to get a feel for the differences in tone and quality between an instrument and a bow.
Be very careful about telling a violin shop your price range before you start testing instruments. This can be an invitation for them to mark up the violins you try by as much as 20%. It is a good idea to bring an instrument of similar quality to the one you are looking at, and to only tell them your price range after you have tried a few instruments you like. If you do this they will be more likely to treat you fairly and respect your wish to not spend more than you can afford.
